EKATERINA LOPATINA

artist and printmaker

I am a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting mixed with 3D printing and printmaking. My work investigates the fluid nature of reality and the transformative events that shape our perception of the world around us.

In painting, I merge classical techniques with contemporary technologies, incorporating elements such as 3D printing to expand the visual and conceptual depth of my compositions. As a printmaker, I specialize in lithography — a rare and historically rich method of hand printing — which allows me to explore texture, repetition, and narrative in a tactile way.

Originally from Moscow, I am currently based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. I hold a degree with honors from the Moscow Art Institute and have participated in numerous exhibitions, including international platforms such as the International Art Salon and the Cosmoscow Art Fair. My works are represented in various private collections and galleries.
WORKS
"GREEN ENERGY"
This series of works are inspired by how modern technologies change the usual things around us, whether we want it or not. For example, having recently moved to the Netherlands, I saw that the modern Dutch landscape is no longer the familiar fields and mills, but powerful, tall and slender modern wind turbines growing in neat rows among fields and forests. And these changes are inevitable, and we need to learn to see new beauty in this. For this series of works, I chose an unusual medium for me – arcylic painting and some parts printed on a 3D printer, which emphasizes the influence of new technologies on familiar things and the world around us.
"FLYING"
This series of lithographs is about sports, strength, beauty and plasticity of the human body. In all the works in this series, I capture the moment of a person’s free flight in space, a moment of absolute freedom and lightness, when a person is not pressed by either material or moral problems. The series is printed in 2 colors, limited edition. Some of the work has already been completed, some is still under implementation.
"HEAVENLY INHABITANTS"
This series of stone lithographs about animated planes is called “Heavenly inhabitants”. In this series I wanted to capture and show the fun similarities between these big flying machines and various characters. It's interesting how these planes, some of them dangerous and deadly, can become so funny and animal-like when you look at them from a different angle! The series is printed in 6 colors, limited edition. Now I continue this series with acrylic on canvas.
"TEXTURES OF THAILAND"
Series of works “Textures of Thailand”. Stone lithographs in 3 colors, edition of 20 prints. These works explore the exotic natural shapes and textures of Thailand. This series is my modern author's interpretation of the classic theme of Botanical illustration.
"ATTRACTIONS"
A series of stone lithographs is dedicated to the bright and positive emotions that we experience when we get to an attractions park. This is an opportunity to return to childhood and again experience that all-encompassing and carefree feeling of joy that goes away when we grow up. Lithographs in 6 colors, limited edition.
"OLD HOUSES"
This series of lithographs is nostalgia for the long school holidays, which I often spent in different villages. For that special, quiet and simple measured life and unity with nature, which are only possible away from big cities and large numbers of people.
“COLOR CONTRASTS”
This series of works is dedicated to the exploration of shapes, shades and reflections, the combination of opposing colors and the search for harmony between them. The series was started during the period of Covid isolation, when there was a lack of bright colors and positive emotions. The works are inspired by impressionist painting.
About
Artist statment
For me, art is a journey — a way of observing and reimagining the world through unexpected perspectives and poetic transformation. I often find beauty and strangeness in familiar things and situations, and my work reflects a deep curiosity for how ordinary elements can be seen anew. My artistic world is not fictional, but observational — rooted in dynamics, emotion, and the search for meaning in everyday forms.
I am a multidisciplinary artist working across painting mixed with 3D printing and printmaking. My creative practice is driven by an exploration of the fluid and ever-changing nature of reality, and the transformative events that shape how we perceive the world around us. In painting, I blend classical techniques with contemporary technologies, including 3D printing, to create layered compositions that challenge traditional boundaries and invite new interpretations.
As a printmaker, I specialize in lithography — a rare and historically rich method of hand printing. Though technically demanding, lithography offers immense expressive potential, allowing me to explore texture, repetition, and narrative in a tactile and meditative way. I am particularly drawn to the graphic genre, and continue to develop several series using this technique.
I enjoy working in series, using visual storytelling to develop themes across multiple works. For example, the «Flying» series captures moments of absolute freedom — flight, weightlessness, and liberation from the constraints of everyday life — while celebrating the beauty and plasticity of the human body. In other series, such as «Heavenly Inhabitants» and «Attractions», I transform personal experiences of motherhood and childhood imagination into whimsical visual narratives. In these works, heavy and sometimes dangerous machines like aircraft are reimagined as playful, endearing characters.
Travel is a major source of inspiration. Many of my works are created in response to journeys and reflect emotional impressions and memories. The «Textures of Thailand» series, for instance, interprets travel experiences through the lens of botanical illustration, capturing the richness of natural forms and surfaces.
I strive to create art that is visually engaging and emotionally uplifting — works that bring light, joy, and sometimes a touch of nostalgia. In a world often marked by chaos and stress, I hope to offer viewers a moment of reflection, delight, and connection.
BIO
Ekaterina was born in Moscow in 1981 and grew up in a family of artists. She graduated with honors from the country’s leading art institute and spent many years working in the hand-printing technique of lithography. It’s a fascinating process, from drawing on stone to making imprints, and this technique offers the artist tremendous scope for self-expression. After moving to the Netherlands some time ago, Ekaterina felt the desire to explore new creative possibilities and techniques, so she began creating paintings using 3D printing elements. She is now deeply passionate about this new technique and theme and plans to develop her work further. In Russia, the artist has participated in over 60 exhibitions, fairs, and art markets, and has also collaborated with galleries. Since 2024, she has regularly exhibited in the Netherlands.
